Wisconsin Mud Flap Rules and Regulations

Whether you regularly operate a truck, trailer, or semi-truck in Wisconsin or are simply passing through on your next route, understanding the mud flap requirements for the state should be high on your pre-trip checklist. Understanding the basics can save you time on inspections, reduce roadside headaches, and make it easier to choose the right mud flap set up for your application.

According to Chapter 347.46 of the Wisconsin Statutes, no person should operate a truck or trailer on the highway unless:

  • such motor truck or semitrailer is equipped with rear fenders or mudguards of such material and so constructed and placed as to restrict to a minimum of splashing of water, mud, or other material which may be thrown by the rear wheels.

The mudguards or fenders must cover the tire or tires they are protecting from the top down so that:

  • The fender or mudguard under any condition of operation or loading of the vehicle has a ground clearance of not more than one third of the horizontal distance from the center of the rearmost axle to the fender or mudguard;
  • The fenders or mudguards shall be at least as wide as the tire or multiple tires they are protecting;

Unless the vehicle is designed so that the rear wheels are covered by other means of construction, the special mudguards must meet the listed requirements.

Wisconsin penalties for violating mudguard and fender requirements typically result in an equipment forfeiture fee, which can range from $10 to $200 after standard state assessments and traffic surcharges are added.
