Here’s a quick overview of the rules and regs from NTEA (National Truck Equipment Association)–The Work Truck Association as of July 2025. There are no federal guidelines for mud flaps on trucks, buses and trailers. Instead, states and the District of Columbia maintain their own location-specific requirements. And since state rules are subject to change without notice, consult each state’s Department of Transportation periodically for revisions or additional details.
