Ratchet binders are used to tighten up the slack on chains when used to secure loads on flatbed trailers and trucks. Using ratchet chain binders, also known as load binders or ratchet binders, involves a few key steps to ensure secure and safe load restraint.
First, attach the hooks of the ratchet binder to the chain links or anchor points on either side of the load. These hooks rotate and “screw in” as the binder is tightened so make sure they are screwed out about half way to give yourself some room to tighten the chain. Ensure the chain is not twisted and is properly aligned.
Next, engage the ratchet mechanism by moving the handle back and forth, which will gradually tighten the chain, as the hooks are screwed into the body of the binder. Continue ratcheting until the chain is sufficiently tight, securing the load firmly in place. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the load or the chain. Always check that the hooks and chains are properly seated and that there is no slack. Once the load is secure, lock the handle in place to prevent it from loosening during transit.
For added safety, inspect the entire setup before moving the vehicle to ensure everything is correctly and securely fastened. Chains and/or binders that are showing pitted rust, have deformed chain links & hooks, and binders that have worn gear teeth or bent parts should be immediately replaced. A quick shot of periodic spray lube on a binders does wonders for smooth operation.
Note also that these directions are for ratchet binders. A snap binder or lever binder is a different unit entirely.
