How Mudflaps Are Custom Branded with Your Logo

A lot of large fleets and trailer manufacturers express interest in getting their name on their mud flaps and it’s a great idea!. Custom logo mud flaps are essentially free advertising. But let the buyer beware….There are good options and bad options for logo branding mud flaps. The cheapest way is to just have your name screen printed on the flap. Although you can achieve a very detailed image by printing this way it’s usually not a good idea. Ink and flexible mud flaps do not get along well. The constant flexing of the actual flap leads to cracking, peeling, and fairly quick failure of the logo print on the surface. A better option to get your mud flaps hot stamped. This involves having a precision stamping plate made – like a branding iron – that is installed into a press and gets very hot. A sheet of colored ink paper is pulled across the mud flap, similar to wax paper, and the die plate is pressed into the ink film. This literally melts the ink into the surface of the mud flap which makes a much more durable logo stamp. Although the die plate isn’t cheap it’s a reliable method and this plate is saved for all future orders. A third option – and the best – is to have the logo literally molded into the surface of the flap. This creates a 3D raised logo image. Molded flaps do not come cheap. Making an entire mold with lettering and images can cost a couple of thousand dollars and is usually done for very high volume users. The actual cost of the flap isn’t much more than any other method, but it’s rather the expense of the initial mold. Beware of mud flap manufacturers that offer only one type of logo print. – it usually means they have a very limited production facility if options are not available.
