There are a host of end types on cargo and winch straps. The most common is simply a steel flat hook that is as wide as the strap itself. This end hook is used to grab on the end on the side rail of the trailer. Important to note that in this application the hook must be at 90 degrees to the side rail. You cannot safely use this strap at angles to side rail. A second type of strap has a Chain end with a clevis hook, and are used when the straps are being used in conjunction with a standard transport chain. The clevis hooks can easily be used to grab onto a chain and pull it tight. Another type is D-ring straps that have an open ring on the end. These are used to secure loads that may already have a welded hook or grab point to which the D-ring is slipped over and the strap then tightened. Another type of hook used on cargo straps is the wire hook. This is a common type and is simply a large wire hook made from a length of very thick wire bent around into a hook shape. This shape allows the end of the strap to easily grab onto a variety of loads for a firm point of contact. Another very common end is the “E-clip” or “E-straps” These are used only inside semi trailers, and are only on 2” straps. These ratchet straps are used to clip into the horizontal rails – called E-track – for securing loads inside semi trailers. E-straps are normally not used on flatbed trailers.
