Importance of Following DOT Reflective Tape Requirements

When it comes to the trucking and rail industry, one aspect that is quite important often goes unnoticed is the use of high-quality reflective tape.

Reflective tape (also known as conspicuity tape) is essential for transport because without it, U.S. roadways and railways would be even more dangerous than they already are. If you’re involved in any way with the transport of trucks, trailers, or railcars, you need to make sure each unit is equipped with the correct amount of high-quality reflective tape.  However, you can’t just purchase a few rolls of tape, slap it on your trucks or rail cars, and expect to never think about it again. You need to make sure that you are complying with federal law requirements when it comes to the placement and measurements of this protective tape.

The Legality of DOT Reflective Tape Requirements

If you’re not adhering to DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements when it comes to reflective tape, you’re not only risking serious financial and legal trouble, but you’re also jeopardizing the safety of anyone else on the roads or the railways across the country. Additionally, DOT tape requirements are essential when it comes to ensuring the success of your business. For example, any truck exceeding a 10,000-pound weight and an 80″ width must have its trailers marked with at least 2-inch wide DOT-C2 reflective tape in alternating white and red stripes. Rail cars, on the other hand, involve 4” wide reflective tape in alternating yellow or white stripes. Railroad reflective tape must also be stamped with the federal certification of FRA-224.

Additionally, as far as trucking is concerned, the sides of all trailers need to be at least 50% covered, and the trailer rear needs two complete strips of reflective tape that cover 100% of it. Specific installation instructions can get a little complicated, so it’s best to do some thorough research online or discuss the various installation requirements with professionals. You can learn more about reflective tape placement and DOT requirements on our website that include specific installation drawings of reflective tape on various types of trailers and rail cars.

Why is Reflective Tape Quality So Important?

You can’t just use any type of reflective tape for these purposes — it needs to be of the highest quality available on the market. Cheap quality tape can be extremely flimsy and fade or fall off quickly, ultimately forcing you to buy new rolls more frequently. So, make sure you’re using the best products available to save yourself money. An interesting note to consider: Water is not the main factor that causes cheap tapes to fail.  It’s sunlight that breaks it down, especially in warmer locations like the southern states. UV rays take a beating on tape and poor quality brands do not stand the test.
