DOT Reflective Tape Requirements for Trucks, Trailers, and Rail Cars

Federal reflective tape requirements help make large commercial vehicles and freight rail equipment easier to see in low-light conditions. The rules vary by vehicle type, size, weight, manufacture date, and operating use. These guides explain the primary U.S. requirements for Department of Transportation (DOT) reflective tape on trailers and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) compliant reflective tape on rail freight rolling stock. Always confirm the regulations that apply to your specific equipment before installation.

DOT Reflective Tape Requirements for Trucks and Trailers

DOT-C2 reflective tape, or conspicuity tape, alternates white and red and bears the DOT-C2 imprint at least every 12″. A 6/6 (6″ red and 6″ white) or a 7/11 (7″ white and 11″ red) pattern can be used, depending on the application.

DOT reflective tape regulations apply to trucks manufactured after December 1, 1993, with a gross vehicle weight rating over 1o,000 pounds, that are at least 80″ wide.

Where is Reflective Tape Required on a Trailer?

On the sides, red-and-white reflective tape must cover at least half of the trailer’s length, distributed as evenly as practicable. The rear requires a horizontal red-and-white treatment across the lower portion, plus white reflective material near the upper corners in an inverted-L pattern.

Exact dimensions, mounting heights, color patterns, and permitted interruptions depend on the applicable federal standard and the trailer configuration. Use the downloadable diagram as a visual reference, then verify the final layout against 49 CFR 571.108 and 49 CFR 393.11.

As an increasingly popular marketing strategy, federal law allows trucking company logos to be imprinted within the reflective trailer tape. See our reflective logo product page for more info.

FRA Reflective Tape Requirements for Rail Freight Equipment

Under 49 CFR Part 224, covered rail freight rolling stock must use FRA-compliant retroreflective sheeting to improve visibility at highway-rail grade crossings. The retro-reflective tape must bear the FRA-224 mark imprinted every 18″ and must be 4″ wide. Approved reflective tape may be yellow, fluorescent yellow, or white.

These requirements apply to covered freight cars and locomotives rather than passenger equipment.

Rail Car Reflective Tape Placement

Reflective tape must be distributed along both sides of covered freight equipment and positioned as close as possible to 42″ above the top of the rail. Reflective tape shouldn’t be installed below the bottom sill of any railcar.

The FRA requires a vertical 36″ strip of reflective tape or two consecutive 18″ segments to be installed close to each end of the railroad car. In between, additional 4″ x 18″ segments should be installed with no more than 12 feet between individual pieces. Refer to the downloadable diagram for equipment-specific layouts.
